Has the AP1000 entered its autumn years? Life post VC Summer
Four AP1000 units currently under construction in the US may not be completed. Westinghouse, a giant of the global nuclear industry, has lost its shirt through their construction, and US ratepayers risk having paid out billions for nothing: is there still hope for Summer? It is also not clear how the AP1000 design will survive this very public setback, and other reactor designs will be looking to capitalize on Westinghouse’s misfortune. 2017-06: Nuclear must be worth the wait
New nuclear will not be the first technology to market in the “new energy” race. Nor is it likely to be cheapest. In order to be a successful proposition, new nuclear needs to promise to be the best technology to support low-carbon energy systems. Nuclear propositions must be relevant to their future markets, and nuclear power projects must demonstrate to consumers, investors and policy makers that they will be “worth the wait”.
